History of Delray Beach

Located 20 miles south of West Palm Beach, Delray Beach was incorporated in 1894. The city grew and shrank quickly in the 1920s as part of the Florida land boom and bust. During the Depression, the two Delray banks failed.  But progress continued and in 1927 the City of Delray merged with the beach area to become the City of Delray Beach.  During World War II, citizens of Delray watched the beach as volunteers atop the seaside Seacrest Hotel while military patrolled the beach on horseback. Growth boomed after WWII as many veterans stayed after training in nearby Boca Raton.  However, it was 1980 before the population grew beyond 30,000.  During the 1970s the city started to spread West and farming/ranching land was developed for housing.  Delray today is a charming and vibrant city in which to build your new custom home.
